Belarus

Overview

Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the north and east, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the north. For nature lovers who do not like to climb mountains, Belarus is the ideal country. 34% of its territory is covered by forests that are the habitats to several different wild animals and plants. Also there are over 11,000 lakes to explore and swim in. But remember, about 70% of the radiation from neighboring Ukraine's 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster entered Belorussian territory, and about a fifth of Belorussian land (principally farmland and forests in the south-eastern provinces) continues to be affected by radiation fallout.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Belarus declared independence on August 25, 1991. Alexander Lukashenko has been the country's president since 1994. During his presidency, Lukashenko has implemented Soviet-era policies, such as state ownership of the economy, despite objections from Western Governments. Under authoritarian rule it has retained closer political and economic ties to Russia than any of the other former Soviet republics. Belarus and Russia signed a treaty on a two-state union on December 8, 1999 envisioning greater political and economic integration. Although Belarus agreed to a framework to carry out the accord, serious steps towards implementation have yet to take place. The union has rapidly progressed in 2007 and the future is uncertain about a merger.

The Belorussian government is criticized for human rights violations and its actions against non-governmental organizations, independent journalists, national minorities, and opposition politicians. Belarus is the only nation in Europe that retains the death penalty for certain crimes during times of peace and war.
