Overview

Monaco, officially the Principality of Monaco, is a small sovereign city-state located in South Western Europe (Monaco is the name of the country as well as the name of its only city). The second-smallest independent state in the world (after Vatican), Monaco is located on the Mediterranean coast, 18 kilometers east of French Nice, and is surrounded on three sides by France. An average person takes only 56 minutes to walk across the width of the principality which is the world's smallest French-speaking country.

With no natural resources to exploit other than its location and climate, Monaco has an economy primarily geared toward finance, commerce, and tourism. The principality which is six times the size of the Vatican is often regarded as a tax haven. The absence of a personal income tax in the principality has attracted to it a considerable number of wealthy "tax refugee" residents from European countries who derive the majority of their income from activity outside Monaco; celebrities such as Formula One drivers attract most of the attention, but the vast majority of them are less well-known business people. That is why many of the Principality's inhabitants are wealthy and from foreign countries making up a majority of the population, at around 84%.

Ever since Monaco's famed casino opened in 1856, the tourism industry has been booming. It currently accounts for close to 25% of the annual revenue. No wonder, Monaco is one of the most attractive destinations for tourists and it is the world's most densely populated sovereign country (16,754 people per square kilometer).
