Overview

Malta, officially the Republic of Malta, is a small and densely populated European micro state. Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean Sea, some 93 km south of the Italian island of Sicily across the Malta Channel. Only the three largest islands Malta, Gozo, and Comino are inhabited. The smaller islands, such as Filfla, Cominotto and the Islands of St. Paul are uninhabited.

Throughout much of its history, Malta has been considered a crucial strategic location due in large part to its position in the Mediterranean Sea. It was held by several cultures including ancient Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Aragonese, Knights of St John, as well as by French and English before it finally became independent in 1964.

A mere dot in the Mediterranean on maps of Europe, the Maltese Islands may well be continent's most compact tribute to ancient history. The pre-historic temples at Hagar Qim date back to the Copper Age (or 3800 BC), making them the oldest human structures known to man. At Valletta, the architectural heritage of the Norman and baroque eras proudly line cobbled streets. The beautiful thing about Malta is that once you have finished enjoying the amazing cities, towns and countryside, the beach is still there with the mesmerizing blue of the Mediterranean warmly inviting visitors into its midst.

The islands of Malta and Gozo are the homes to some of the most amazing beaches in the world ideal for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. There are sandy beaches and rock beaches, which have rocky shorelines that gently enter the water. There are countless beaches to choose from offering different activities.
