Overview

Italy, officially Italian Republic, is a large country in Southern Europe. Italy shares its northern, Alpine boundary with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The country, which is a boot-shaped peninsula, is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Sardinian Sea, and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Sicilian and Ionian Seas in the South, and Adriatic Sea in the East. There are two major islands as part of the country: Sardinia, which is an island off the west coast of Italy, and Sicily, which is at the southern tip (the "toe") of the Italian boot.

Two independent mini-states lie within Italy: San Marino and Vatican City. While technically they are not part of the European Union, both of these states are also part of the Schengen Region and the European Monetary Union.

There is a great number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites - art and monuments are everywhere around the country. Italy is also famous worldwide for its cuisine, its fashion, the luxury sports cars and motorcycles, as well as for its beautiful coasts, lakes and mountains (the Alps and the Appennines).

Italy is a home of the culture, some of soccer's finest teams and the Roman Catholic church. Quite simply, this is a place of such diversity that the only thing that will stop you spending the rest of your days here is an empty wallet. Museums display some of the most beautiful art works ever made; but the living, breathing Italy that operates outside museum doors has enough beauty to suffice the average visitor. Stroll down the streets of Rome, Florence, Naples or Venice, and you will be struck by the wealth of history and culture tied up in the cobbled streets, baroque styled buildings, or beautiful chapels.

Natural beauty abounds, too: gorgeous stretches of coastline; the majestic Alps sealing off the northern border; and the people, of course. Best of all, Italy is the birthplace of pizza and pasta, so expect a culinary experience superior to any Pizza Hut meal you've ever had.

Expectedly, tourism is very important to the Italian economy: with over 43.7 million visitors a year, Italy is ranked as the fifth major tourist destination in the world.

General information

Continent:Europe
Subregion:Southern Europe
Area:301,225 sq km (116,303 sq mi)
Capital:Rome
Government:Parliamentary republic
Population:59.9 million
Languages:Not surprisingly, Italian is the official language spoken by the vast majority of Italians. In some regions of the country German, French, Greek and Slovene languages are spoken by minorities. In cities you can often speak English with younger people, aged between 14 and 35: almost everyone had to take English in school since the 80's, though the result depends on the person. Anyway, English is spoken fairly commonly on well-traveled paths, especially in touristic areas where it is widely spoken by sellers and tourist operators. German, French, Japanese and Spanish are often spoken in these areas as well, but a few less.
Religions:Roman Catholicism is by far the largest religion in the country, although the Catholic Church is no longer officially the state religion. Fully 87.8% of Italians identified themselves as Roman Catholic. Other religious groups in Italy include Eastern Orthodoxes(1.6%), Protestants (1.1%), and Muslims (2.1%).

Visas:Italy is a member of the Schengen Agreement, so all visa laws that apply to other member states apply to Italy. Like other Schengen member states, the 90-day counter begins once you enter the Schengen area and is not reset by travel outside it.
Airports:One of the most convenient ways to get to Italy is by plane. Two airports with flights to and from North America and Asia are Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Malpensa International Airport (MXP) in Milan. Travellers also may enter Italy through other air gateways: Marco Polo Airport (VCE) in Venice, Sandro Pertini Airport (TRN) in Turin, Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA) in Pisa, Florence International Airport (FLR), Guglielmo Marconi International Airport (BLQ) in Bologna, etc.
Alitalia the official Italian airline serves daily flights in and out of all major airports.
