Overview
Georgia, officially Republic of Georgia, is a small mountainous country in the Caucasus region, located at the dividing line between Europe and Asia. It is bordered by the Russian Federation to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, Armenia to the south, and Turkey to the southwest. Georgia's population, excluding Abkhazia and South Ossetia, is 4.4 million, of whom nearly 84% are ethnic Georgians.
The history of Georgia can be traced back to the ancient Kingdom of Colchis and Iberia, and it was one of the first countries to adopt Christianity as an official religion early in the 4th century.
During the USSR era, Georgia was the "Riviera of the Soviet Union" and was renowned for its cuisine and wine. The Georgian Black Sea coast, in particular (Abkhazia and Ajara), enjoys sub-tropical conditions and beautiful sea beaches with palms and cypresses.
In August 2008, Georgia engaged in an armed conflict with Russia and separatist groups from South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In the aftermath of the conflict Russia recognized the Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states, but almost no country followed suit, and the West insists that they are still part of Georgia.
Although Georgia may seem as a relatively small country, it is big on geographical diversity. It has its own seashore, with the cities of Batumi in Adjara and Soukhumi in Abkhazia being hotspots in summer. The northern regions are extremely mountainous, with eternal snow on the highest summits, like Mount Kazbeg, which rises over 5000 meters above the central fertile valley of Georgia. This mountains are not always easily accessibly though, and some areas are better not visited without a local guide who knows the people.
Another typical part of Georgia is the wine region in the northeast and east of the country, in particular Kakheti, where different sort of grapes are grown, waiting to become wine eventually and join a good Georgian party. Many visitors here may prove that Georgians have strong traditions of hospitality, chivalry, and codes of personal honor. They believe that guests come from God.
Tourism is an increasingly significant part of the Georgian economy. According to the government, there are 103 resorts in different climatic zones in Georgia. Tourist attractions include more than 2000 mineral springs, over 12,000 historical and cultural monuments, four of them are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Bagrati Cathedral in Kutaisi and Gelati Monastery, historical monuments of Mtskheta, and Upper Svaneti).
