Island quarter is the place, where time rests, or goes very slowly. There is no need to hurry, let us better enjoy fresh air and pure nature. Locals treat nature with love. Where else you see old oak tree, grown on football field.
Our tour starts from Tallinn and in 1,5 h we come to ferry terminal. In 30 minutes by ferry we arrive to Muhu Island. Muhu isle is smaller than Tallinn, but its inhabitants have unique crafts and make colourful clothes. Muhu inhabitants are adventurous and glib, as we get to know from humorous legends. In Muhu isle we stop to see local craft of goat skin tanning and can buy colourful cloth from local pattern.
In front of it there staying the oldest Muhu church of St Catherine of 1200s, to which it is obligatory to go in.
During the tour we visit small village – open air museum Koguva, then ostrich/kangaroo farm and buy cream from ostrich fat (well fitted for dermatitis) or egg, equal to12 chicken eggs. From Muhu to Saaremaa we drive by 4 km dam. It is safe and very picturesque.
Symbols of islands are straw roofs, warm beer, sauna brooms and windmills. Windmills were 800, and they worked till 1960s, when islands were not electrified. Windmill museum in Angla settlement is worth to visit. Near mills we can have lunch and try flavoured rye bread from miller.
Next we usually stop at Kaali village to see round lake, made by meteorite fall some millions years ago. The place is every energetic and even mystic. But was it exactly meteorite. Let is think together.
Then we drive to only town in Saaremaa Kuressaare, known as a resort capital of Estonia. We make a tour in Old Town: we see beautiful Town hall, churches and unforgettable monument to national hero of Islands.
Jewel of island is bishop castle in Estonia of 1350s, open as local history museum. We pray as a bishop in the chapel or try to defend castle as a knight from balcony. We go through secret paths and visit jail «Lion pit», where they dumped apostates of belief and lions executed them immediately.
Finally we drive to restaurant of local food i big windmill, having been working till Second World War. By its wings, military made signals to aliens. As an appetitive I recommend to try fried baltic herring, as a main course - pumpkin soup in bread loaf with local craft beer.
Having time we may visit small village Panga on the North, which has own coat of arms, currency and flag. After that we drive back to ferry.
