Time-travelling trip in Azerbaijan
A trip to the remote village of Lahic, located about 1300 metres above sea level, a village of copper craftsmen.
Probably, you've heard about this village (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lah%C4%B1c,_Ismailli) hidden in rocky mountains of Ismayilli region.
Being a big city centuries ago with population of 12000 now it has less than just a 1000 people living in the village.Main income source for locals is the copper works and carpet weaving.
They developed a construction techniques to prevent damage from earthquakes - layers of wood are built into the river stones, acting as a shock absorbers.
The copper craftmanship of Lahij is included to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
Locals are proud not only of their crafts - the sewage system here is more than 1000 years old, one of the oldest in the world.
Some people call the road to Lahij "dangerous", but I would rather call it stunning. The cliffs above your head and the precipice on another side, the most parts of the road hardly will fit 2 cars.
So, trip starts from any point of Baku.
First stop - Diri Baba mausoleum, built in a cliff in Maraza, 1401. Some people compare it to Petra, but don't be so excited :)
We will visit ancient cemetery with Yeddi Gumbez mausoleum complex in Shamakhi. You might see these domes in some ads in plane if your flight was with AZAL.
We will drive to the oldest mosque in Azerbaijan - was built in 743 year (Shamakhi). Nowadays it's a "copy", the old one was demolished by few earthquakes.
Suspended bridge to Zarnava village.
Just at the "entrance" to Lahic there are few waterfalls in 30 minutes hiking. One waterfall on the way to Lahij in 5-10 minutes walking (will cross small river few times)
