The legend of the village of Molovata says that a long time ago, when the Dniester River was just a brook, two fishermen were fishing on the opposite banks of the Dniester. The one on the right bank asked the other one how many fishes he had caught, and the reply in Russian was “Malovato” [kind of few]. That was how the settlement got the name of “Molovata” and its residents are called “moloviţeni”.
Molovata Noua was among the first places on the left bank of the Dniester where the first wooden churches were built. Some parts of the village have their own names: “the Dniester Bend” was called so because the village lies as if on a peninsula, “Old Manole’s ravine”, the former border with the neighbouring village of Cocieri, currently the location of the “Struguraş” [“Bunch of grapes”] sanatorium. “Hill Head” – the riverside where the village began. “At Bairac” – a house built outside the village, the former residence of a bey (higher Turkish official). There is a place in the rock nearby the village, called “La Uneri”, the place of numerous historical battles. “The meadows” was where the old village residents had their gardens. “La rani” is where the Dniester waters were shallow. “In Staniste” was a higher place in the village, the venue of the residents’ meetings. The entrance into the village was called “In chisc” because it is located in the highest place of the village (on a peak). The village museum houses numerous personal belongings of the inhabitants, an impressive collection of wedding dresses gathered over many years, the former day-to-day wear of the locals, handicraft items, clay, etc.
The village of Marcauti will reveal you the most picturesque sights of the Dniester River, whereas the chernozem soils surrounding the “Tiganesti” forest are a veritable pride of our country.
While walking on foot you will be able to enjoy the silence and surrounding beauty, as well as observe and perceive the true calm of Moldovan villages, admiring the green embellishment of our countryside. Once arriving at Orheiul Vechi – the pearl of the Moldovan tourism – you will experience the hospitality of the local housewives that will serve you traditional meals from the oven of the house.
