Up to the unification of Italy, that occurred in 1861, the Italian economy and society were mostly based on the big landowning. Agricolture was the main industry in the South and 99% of people were involved in these matters. The problem was that the land was own by few rich families while most of the population was working for them. This situation created a deep social discrepancy between the upper class and common people.
The rich family frequently had also a noble title, so that after some centuries they had collected such a great richness that is still today visible in their old properties.
Marvellous palaces painted and decored with frescoes and ancient furniture, dominant position in the richest area of the town, usually near the main church, was a device to display the role that these families played in the local society.
In Matera, the beauty of the palaces strikes with the cave-dwellings of poor peasants, living in this way till the 50ies, when Matera was named "the shame of Italy".
The experience of cooking in a noble palace combine together a cooking class with the history of nobleness in Matera.
Over there we will have the opportunity to meet the palace owner, and we will prepare with her some traditional courses, including hand made pasta. We will learn and cook together some simple courses of the tradition, so that you will be able to reply the same courses at home.
We will remain for lunch or dinner to eat the courses prepared together in the morning. The meal will be server in one of the most exclusive hall of the palace, the same hall where, in 1806, a big party was organized on behalf of the most important families of Matera for the visit of Giuseppe Bonaparte, Napoleone's brother and king of Neaples.
You will admire some of the forniture originally used for the celebration, discovering the long family history of the palace. We will discover the rich life one of the most important family of Barons in the area.
The location will be exclusively opened form us during the class and during the meal, so that you will feel yourself part of this world for one night!
