The tour will be like a zoom: we will get closer and closer to this amazing specular city party carved in the rocks and party built outside.
We wil start with the belvedere situated up on the hill in front of Matera to visit some caves used since the prehistoric times and to admire the terrific skyline of the city from the other side of the gorge.
After we will drive along the Appian Way to get to an hidden jewel in the countryside: the Crypt of the Original Sin named "The Sistin chapel of the rupestrian churches" for its astonishing frescoes dating back to the 9th century A.C.
For lunch it's possible to choose between a served typical lunch (with wine tasting) at the farmhouse next to the crypt or for a quick standing focaccia at a bakery in Matera.
In the afternooon we will enjoy the Unesco Sassi (it means stones) districts of Matera with buildings carved in the rocks where we will visit a cave dwelling with the original furniture (to understand poor people's living conditions until the Second World War), a rupestrian (rocky) church with some frescoes, the area of the city that's still abandoned (utilized as movie set for Italian and international productions such as The Passion of Christ of Mel Gibson, the remake of Ben Hur with Jack Hudson and Morgan Freeman, Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, The Story of Mary Magdalene with Mara Rooney and Joaquin Phoenix).
At the end of the tour, if you like, we can visit also the upper city with the Medieval (with the Sedile square and the Cathedral), the Baroque part of the city and/or some other rupestrian church or a Palombaro (a huge cistern to collect and share the rainwater) and/or a contemporary art musuem, a folk art and tradition one, etc.
