A Day in Grado.
The island faces the Adriatic Sea towards South and the Lagoon towards North. The itinerary starts with a lagoon trip, that can be organized by renting a boat for groups, or by water taxi for individuals or small groups of 10 participants. The boat is the only way to see the channels, that separates smaller islands where local people used to live in the past, called " casuni" , made of reeds on a small structure of wood. Colors are every day and every hours different, according to seasons, weather, wind or sun. Particularly nice in Autumn (September, October, November) thanks to thousands of migratory birds. Back in town, we'll visit the old city center, that looks like a small Venice, with the traditional calli, campi and campielli, and two of the most important Churches, called Basiliche, of Italy, dated IV-VI c. a.C. Yes, it means they are about 1.500 years old. Lunch can be also organized, our traditional cooking ist mostly fish cooking, with "polenta" and a glas of good wine, but without tomatoes. You'll have the opportunity to taste the "boreto", which is a fish soup ( sea breams, or sea bass and many others) not liquid but rather dense, with a lot of black pepper! why? well, Grado was venetian, from IX C. to 1797. In the XII C. there was a Doge, who had a black trade of black pepper, spices where one of the product imported the most. Should you come here in Winter, you can't miss the Nativity exposition: abaout 250 Nativities in town, with guided tours and the music of the bagpipes players.Visit Grado, and you'll discover why it's called AQUILEIA'S DAUGHTER AND VENICE' MOTHER!
