Let's explore together the third largest city of Cyprus, Larnaca. Our walk begins in the center of the town. We will scroll down the main palm promenade Finikoudes, planted with tall palm trees, and with many cafés and restaurants on one side and a beautiful beach on the other side. I will tell you more about Larnaca history and present. We will talk about different names Larnaca bore in the past and about important persons who lived or visited our town in history. I will show you the main points of interests there. For example Big Mosque or Medieval Fort we will see from outside. We will visit Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Lazaros, the main church of the town. It is a real jewel of byzantine art and architecture. Saint Lazaros is the patron saint of Larnaca and I will tell you more about his life story and why he is so important for local people.
Do you want to know more daily life of Cypriots in the town? I will take you to traditional kafeneio, which is the place where locals often gather to chat with friends or neighbors and drink hot Cyprus coffee or iced coffee frappé. It is a family-run business where Mr Spyros makes maybe the best Cyprus coffee in the town and his wife Maroula prepares amazing Cyprus sandwiches or traditional rolls with black olives or traditional haloumi cheese. Hot or cold coffee/person and sandwich or roll/ per person are included in the price of the tour.
Later we will drive about 10 minutes to the west of the city and we will visit the Salt Lake of Larnaca. It is a unique complex of few salt lakes, where salt was gathered and exported from Cyprus until the second half of the last century. The lake evaporates in summer and fills up with water in winter. If our tour will be in December to March, we might see flamingos and other migratory birds in the middle of the lake.
The last point of our excursion is the Mosque Hala Sultan Tekke located on the bank of the lake. Inside the mosque we will see the tomb of Umm Haram, the female relative of Prophet Mohammed, the Islam founder. We will learn more about her story and find out why this mosque belongs to the most holy places in the Muslim world.
From there we will return back to Larnaca to the place where we met in the morning.
There is a beautiful sandy beach on the palm promenade Finikudes. If you like to have a dip after the tour, don't forget to take your swimsuit with you.
