In Ancient China People thought the world was made up of five element, Gold(metal), wood, water, fire, soil or earth. The different element means different direction and different seasons. for example, The wood means east and spring, fire means south and summer. metal means west and autumn, north means water and winter, and always under our feet is soil or earth. because the water of the only river in forbidden city is come from west, from the direction of Gold, that is why the water was named as Golden water. the name of the river was named as Golden water river.
When we visit China, we will found there are 2 lions always stand in the front of the big main buildings, they were there just like the door keepers, keep evil spirits away. if we stand the same direction to the buildings, the lion of our left side will be the male one, means 'Yang'. there is a ball under one feet of the lion, it means lucky and dominate the world. and the lion on our right side will be the female one, means 'Yin' and there is a baby lion under one of the feet of the lion, it means happiness and more babies. In Ancient China it means more baby more happiness.
The Gate of supreme Harmony, The main gate of the outer court of the forbidden city.
it's the place for the emperors of Ming to have a meeting with his high officials in the morning, it would be held every 3 or 5 days.
And behind of it is the most important building of the whole country in Ming and Qing Dynasties. it's the Hall of supreme Harmony. that was only used for the 3 occasions.
The 1st, for the emperor's throne ceremony, The 2nd was for the emperor's wedding ceremony, and the 3rd was for the emperor's birthday celebration. This building and the next 2 were the 3 main buildings of the outter court of the forbidden city and they were the highlights of the city, all of them were built on a foundation about 10 meters high with 3 layers which refer heaven, earth and human beings, the 3 treasures of the world.
