About Thimphu
The city of Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan, which is considered a carefully hidden gem , representing an absolutely unique city, combining the ancient traditions with (almost) European modernity.
The city is situated on the height of about 2400 meters above the sea level and is considered one of the most alpine capitals in the whole world and the only one to have no traffic lights on the territory of the city at all.
Tashichho Dzong is considered the main local sightseeing, which represents an ancient royal residence of about 350 years old. Nowadays the main governmental buildings are situated there, but not very long time ago it was a large monastery, intended for more than 2000 monks!
National Library of Thimphu is considered another popular tourist destination, as it contains an incredibly large number of the most varied ancient Buddhist manuscripts. Besides that, the city of Thimphu offers its foreign guests a very large number of the most varied museums, like Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan, National Folk Heritage Museum, Simply Bhutan Museum or, for example, Terton Gallery and its multiple exhivitions, telling about the culture, customs and traditions o the country, its history and the lifestyle of the local citizens in general.
