Moldova, officially the Republic of Moldova, is a small landlocked country in Eastern Europe, surrounded by Romania to the southwest, across the Prut river, and Ukraine to the northeast.

This is a multinational republic that has suffered from violent ethnic conflict. In 1994, this conflict led to the creation of the self-proclaimed Transnistria Republic in eastern Moldova. The republic which includes a large proportion of ethnic Russians and Ukrainian, has its own government and currency but is not recognized by any other country. In the last years economic links have been re-established between these two parts of Moldova despite failure in political negotiations.

Moldova is a land of considerable natural beauty. Vineyards line much of the landscape, and Moldovan wine is some of the finest according to local people, particularly considering its low price. For many years wine making in Moldova was and still is the general occupation of the population. Many families have their own recipes and strands of grapes that have been passed down through the generations.

But the sad fact is that Moldova is a nation still struggling to get to its feet. Moldova is currently regarded as Europe's poorest country, having the lowest GDP per capita in Europe in 2008. Because of widespread poverty Moldovians are considered some of the least happy citizens in the world.

The official language of the country is Moldavian, which is identical to Romanian, sharing the same literary standard. Moldovan, written in the Latin script, is the name of the official language of the Republic of Moldova. At the same time Moldovan in the Cyrillic alphabet along with Russian and Ukrainian is one of the three official languages of the breakaway territory of Transnistria. In Moldova, Russian is provided with the status of a "language of inter ethnic communication", and remains widely used on all levels of the society and the state. There is however, little chance for one to be understood in other languages, although English has begun to be studied wider in schools. Also, menus in the capital often include Moldovan, Russian and English.
