February 16, 2010 06:28 | Abruzzo Small Group Travel - Walking Holiday in Majella, ItalyAuthentic Walking Holidays
From high mountains and forests to marvelous rural churches to the ruins of ancient cities to traditional artisans, Abruzzo offers many rewards. We focus our explorations on the Majella National Park, a haunt of wolves, bears, herds of chamois and some 300 varieties of birds.
Alpine meadows and forests of beech give way at the massif’s highest reaches to an almost desert landscape, with pockets of year-round snow. Mountain streams tumble down deep gorges and hidden valleys, where secluded rock hermitages from the Middle Ages can be found. Rich nature, old traditions and archeological findings contribute to make the Mount Majella territories a perfect place for excursions and trips.
