Armenia, officially the Republic of Armenia, is a small landlocked mountainous country in the Southern Caucasus between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Located at the juncture of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, it borders Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran to the south.
A former republic of the Soviet Union, Armenia is a unitary, multiparty, democratic nation state with an ancient cultural heritage. The Kingdom of Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity as its religion in the early years of the 4th century (the traditional date is 301).
On a trip to Armenia, you will frequently be reminded that Armenia was the world's first official Christian country. You will have a hard time forgetting this as a tourist, since countless monasteries are among Armenia's premier tourist attractions. Unfortunately for those who might otherwise suffer monastery fatigue, many of these monasteries are built in places of incredible natural beauty. Making the sites of monasteries like Tatev, Noravank, Haghartsin, Haghpat and Geghard well worth the visit even without the impressive, millennia old monasteries found there.
What you should expect in Armenia is some of the world's oldest settlements, beautiful folk music, a mass of ancient churches, an attractive countryside landscape and Lake Sevan, one of the largest alpine lakes in the world.

Tips:
Tipping is increasingly common in Armenia, especially at cafes and restaurants. Many Armenians simply round up their checks, or leave ten percent. Some cafe staff are only compensated in the tips they earn, though you cannot always tell by the service they provide. Many restaurants have begun to charge a ten percent "service fee" which they usually do not share with the waiters, and it is not clear for what it is used. This fee is often not clearly stated on the menu, so you should ask if you want to know. Tipping is usually not expected in taxis, but again, rounding up is not uncommon.
Visas:
Citizens of USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, and EU countries can buy a visa when they arrive at any entry point to Armenia. A 120 day visa costs 15,000 dram (about $50). A bill is under consideration to introduce a $10 visa, and plus there is a 3 day transit visa option. Visitors from the CIS do not need a visa for up to 90 days. Visitors from other countries must apply for a visa at their nearest embassy/consulate before arriving. Note that when visiting Nagorno Karabakh you will need a separate visa, which you can get within a day in the capital Yerevan. Also be sure to have this visa on a separate paper when you want to visit Azerbaijan afterwards, because visiting Nagorno Karabakh is considered illegal crossing into their country and most passports do get checked!
Airports:
The main gateway to Armenia is Zvartnots International Airport (EVN), located in 10 km from Yerevan. Discounted flights to Yerevan can be found using airlines such as Lufthansa and British Midland.
